GdG at a Glance
The Union of Municipal Employees represents the interests of the employees of more than 2,400 local towns and municipalities of Austria. The Union of Municipal Employees (GdG) has over 168,000 members (including active and retired municipal employees), which amounts to a labour organisation of 81 percent.
Municipal employees are active in over 200 occupation groups, mainly in the sectors municipal administration, public health, social services, public utilities and waste management (electricity, gas, water supply, waste disposal, etc.), public transport, funeral services, education, etc.
Membership is voluntary and open to all employees of local towns and municipalities, irrespective of the employees' labour status (labourer or salaried employee), their employment agreement (public servants and contracted public servants, at a 2:1 ratio, traineeship or apprenticeship). In addition, former active municipal employees have the option of remaining members of the GdG during retirement.
